Standalone Edits

A book critique provides a first-pass assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of a book, as well as a roadmap for how to build upon what is working and fix what is not.

Our feedback will cover major issues like structure, organization, pacing, plot and character issues (for fiction), argumentation and presentation (for nonfiction), and the overall ability of the book to connect with the reader. Feedback will be delivered in an editorial letter that breaks down the issues and provides a clear route forward.

A developmental review focuses on the overall content and structure of the book, including consistency, flow, structure, readability, and clarity. Fiction reviews will also include narrative dynamics, plot structure, character arcs, theme questions, and other storytelling mechanics.

Suggestions might be made to move around entire paragraphs or add/delete sections of the book altogether. Comments will be added along the margins to suggest what needs to be reworked, expanded, deleted, or relocated. Our editors will also provide a thorough breakdown of our comments and suggestions in an editorial letter.

NOTE: No in-text editing will be provided. If you need editing as well, see our packages below.

A line edit is the most thorough of all the editing options. It covers tone, tense, flow, consistency, and overall writing structure within the manuscript. Along with in-text edits, the line editor will also add comments and suggestions about changing or omitting certain portions of the manuscript. Line editing may also involve rewording sentences and possibly entire paragraphs to enhance readability.

Please note that line editing only covers the flow of what is already there; it does not cover overall story, chapter structure, or redirection of plotlines (see developmental review), nor does it focus extensively on correcting grammar, punctuation, or typos (see copyediting).

A copyedit is often one of the final passes on the manuscript after all developmental and line edits have already been made (either by the editor or by the author themselves).

In a copyedit, the editor focuses on grammatical correctness, punctuation, consistency, vocabulary, word usage, and spelling. The goal of a copyedit is to catch and remove as many errors as possible; it does not add material or remove clunkiness and redundancy (see line edit).

Questions?

GET ANSWERS TO THE MOST
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you offer revisions?2020-12-09T10:21:02-07:00

We do not offer any revisions with our standalone editing services. Reviewing and reediting revisions often takes a considerable amount of time and effort, so if you would like to work on multiple revisions, we recommend looking at one of our editing packages.

What kind of feedback do you provide?2020-12-09T10:21:58-07:00

We provide feedback in our developmental reviews and beta reads, and also in our Story Guide and Story Architect packages. For fiction, this includes in-text comments for narrative mechanics, plot arcs, character development, story questions, theme, tone, and world-building. For nonfiction, this includes mechanics of the text, organization, argumentation, pacing, presentation of facts, and citations. If you have a specific area that you’d like us to focus on (e.g., dialogue), we can certainly accommodate!

Do I need a copyedit or a line edit?2020-12-09T10:23:09-07:00

It all depends on where you are in the creative process. If you have a solid manuscript that is already clear and reads well, a copyedit is the right fit to correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation. If you need a deep edit to improve the flow and tighten up the language, a line edit is for you.

What is the difference between a copyedit and a line edit?2020-12-09T10:24:00-07:00

A line edit focuses on the creative aspects of the text, including the language and writing style at the sentence and paragraph level. The purpose of a line edit is to make the text clear, fluid, and enjoyable to read—but it does NOT focus on catching errors. That is where a copyedit comes in!
